Product Description
Vitasleep® is a unique combination of Armillaria mellea, Aquamin™ F and L-tryptophan for promoting good sleep quality without the side effects from sedative medications.
Armillaria mellea, also known as honey mushroom, belongs to the Tricholo-mataccae family and is an edible medicinal mushroom widely distributed in North America, and northeast Asia. It has a strong symbiotic relationship with Gastrodia elata. Armillaria mellea has been used as a traditional medicine in Asia to treat various human medical diseases such as headache, insomnia, neurasthenia, palsy, dizziness, numbness in limbs, infantile convulsion and microbial infectious diseases.2
Aquamin™ Fa multi-mineral supplement, derived from the red algae Lithothamnion corallioides which is rich in calcium and magnesium and a variety of trace minerals including manganese, selenium and zinc.
Magnesium, a naturalN-methyl-D-aspartic acid (NMDA) antagonist and GABA agonist, is thought to play a role in sleep regulation. Magnesium enhances melatonin secretion by stimulating serotonin N-acetyl transferase activity. Supplementation of magnesium in elderly with insomnia appears to improve subjective measures of insomnia such as insomnia severity index (ISI) score, sleep efficiency, sleep time and sleep onset latency, early morning awakening, and likewise, insomnia objective measures such as concentration of serum renin, melatonin, and serum cortisol.3
L-tryptophan is a large neutral amino acid that is the metabolic precursor of serotonin (a neurotransmitter), melatonin (a neurohormone), and niacin (vitamin B3). As early as 1974, L-tryptophan was suggested as a natural hypnotic. Unlike many sedative medications, L-tryptophan does not limit cognitive performance or inhibit arousal from sleep4,5 Serotonin, an end product of L-tryptophan metabolism, is involved in REM sleep.6 Studies have shown that administration of L-tryptophan shortened sleep-onset latency and increased stage IV sleep.4,7,8
