Product Description
Cardiovascular disease (CVD), which include a variety of diseases such as coronary artery disease, heart failure, dyslipidemias, and hypertension, is the leading cause of death worldwide. Cardio CPS® is a unique combination of panax ginseng extract, hawthorn extract, coenzyme Q10 and selenium for optimal support of cardiovascular health.
Panax ginseng or Asian ginseng is a perennial herb native to Asia. It has an extensive history dating up to 2000 years back in ancient China when its therapeutic properties were recorded in the medical material Shen Nong Ben Cao Jing. The name Panax is derived from the greek word “panacea” or “all-healing”, which reflects the wide variety of beneficial effects Panax ginseng is reported to have, including vasorelaxation, antioxidative, anti-inflammatory, and anticancer properties. Some studies suggest that Panax ginseng improves heart function as it inhibits production of reactive oxygen species, stimulates production of nitric oxide and enhances vasomotor tone. This in turns promotes blood circulation, regulates lipid profile with a small reduction in blood pressure.1-4
Hawthorn, a Crataegus species, is the oldest known medicinal plant in European medicine, and has traditionally been used as a heart tonic to treat disorders such as hypertension, angina, arrhythmias and heart failure since first century AD. Hawthorn improves heart function by increasing the integrity of blood vessel wall, improving coronary blood flow with positive effects on oxygen utilization and contracting ability of the heart. Hawthorn is currently used as an adjunct to standard medical therapy to relieve symptoms of chronic congestive heart failure of New York Heart Association classes I to III.5-7
Coenzyme Q10 (ubiquinone) is a fat soluble compound that is involved in the generation of energy in our body through production of ATP. It is also an intracellular antioxidant that protects our cells from free radical-induced oxidative damage. Coenzyme Q10 is present in all tissues and organs in the body, with the highest concentrations in the heart. Its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects have been reported to reduce the risk of coronary artery disease.8-10
Selenium is an essential trace element involved in many metabolic functions and is an integral part of the antioxidant enzyme glutathione peroxidase. It may be involved in the prevention of a number of chronic diseases including cardiovascular diseases and cancer.11-12
