Prostate cancer is a cancer that only affects men. Out of a hundred men over the age of sixty, six will have cancer before their 70th birthday.
Majority of prostate cancer begins in the gland cells, which produces the prostate fluid present in semen. This is known as adenocarcinoma.
Many believe that consuming more lycopene or selenium in the form of tomatoes, nuts seeds and seafood would lower the risk of prostate cancer, but recent studies from World Cancer Research Fund have shown that there is insufficient evidence to link the two.
To know how to prevent prostate cancer, it is important to know that like all other cancers, it is always important to start with your daily life.
- Low-fat diet
Certain studies have shown that men who consumed a high-fat diet had an increased risk of prostate cancer.
- Consume more fats from plants than animals
Fats in the form of olive oil and avocados instead of dairy products.
- Eat less meat
Greater consumption of meat, poultry and fish is associated with higher blood level of IGF-1, which translates into a higher risk of prostate cancer. Studies have also shown that men who have lower dairy intake were also shown to have a lower risk of prostate cancer.
- Maintain a healthy weight
Men who are overweight or obese have a higher risk of prostate cancer.
- Exercise at least three hours a week
Men who exercised at least three hours a week were found to have 61% lower risk of death from prostate cancer.
