What are cardiotoxicity ?
Cardiotoxicity is a condition when there is damage to the heart muscle. As a result of cardiotoxicity, your heart may not be able to pump blood throughout your body as well. This may be due to chemotherapy drugs, or other medications you may be taking to control your disease. Cardiotoxicity, if severe, may lead to damaged heart muscle. Injury to heart muscle may cause a disturbance in the heart’s pumping action, and subsequent heart failure.
Symptoms of heart failure can include:
- Shortness of breath noted during activity (most commonly) or at rest, especially when you lie down flat in bed
- Cough that produces white sputum.
- Rapid weight gain.
- Swelling in ankles, legs, and abdomen
- Dizziness, fatigue and weakness
- Rapid or irregular heartbeats
